Immediately after the first Ukrainian citizens were detained in the East of Ukraine and Russia-controlled Crimea, the Centre for Civil Liberties launched international campaigns to protect Ukrainian political prisoners and civilian hostages.
In 2014, the CCL launched the #LetMyPeopleGo campaign to raise awareness about the political persecution of Ukrainian citizens in Russia, Crimea, and Donbas. This campaign united thousands of people across Europe, as well as in the United States and other countries, demanding to release all Ukrainian political prisoners arrested in Russia and Crimea. In 2018, when Ukrainian film director and political prisoner Oleg Sentsov went on a hunger strike, the CCL launched the international initiative #SaveOlegSentsov. The actions demanding the release of the hunger-striking Sentsov and all Ukrainian political prisoners were held in dozens of countries worldwide.
After Oleg Sentsov was released from prison and left Russia in 2019, the initiative was renamed to #PrisonersVoice. The goal of the initiative is to release all Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia, Crimea, and Donbas.
