Crimean occupation authorities ban Mejlis activity
Crimean occupation authorities ban Mejlis activity The “prosecutor” of annexed Crimea, Natalia Poklonskaya, handed Nariman Dzhelyalovu, the deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, a copy of the “action to prohibit the activities of the organization” under Article 9 of the Federal Law (“Countering Extremist Activity”). According to Poklonskaya, it’s the Crimean Tatar people of the annexed peninsula who allegedly request to ban the activities of the Mejlis.
According to the Russian legislation, the final decision will be taken by the occupation court. However, the decision is foreseeable.
The prohibition of the work of the Mejlis on the basis of the Russian law on Counteracting Extremist Activity entails a trail of negative effects. It could lead to the absolute prohibition of the use of Mejlis symbols, part of which is a Crimean Tatar flag, to the criminal liability for the contribution to the work of the organization and its financing, as well as to the prohibition of the organization materials dissemination leading to the prosecution of Majlis members and its supporters.
