Special task force officers search ward of Afanasyev

The special task force officers of the Russian Federal Service for the Execution of Sentences have searched the ward of Ukrainian citizen Gennady Afanasyev and seized all the documents.

This is reported by the human rights activists of the Center for Civil Liberties referring to Alexander Popkov, the lawyer of Afanasyev.

In addition, a SIM card was allegedly found in the jacket of Afanasyev. The lawyer suspects that it is just a pretext for imposing another disciplinary action on Gennady. The Ukrainian citizen was previously held in an isolation cell for allegedly found half of the blade in his belongings or other far-fetched pretexts. He is likely to be put in an isolation cell again because of the SIM card. As his lawyer said on the air of Ukrainian Channel 5, more than ten actions have been already imposed on the inmate. This is done in order to worsen the conditions of his detention.

As reported, Gennady Afanasyev, one of the defendants in the so-called “Crimean case,” is serving a sentence in a maximum security penal colony in Syktyvkar (Komi Republic of the Russian Federation).

In May of 2014, four Ukrainian citizens – Gennady Afanasyev, Oleksandr Kolchenko, Oleg Sentsov and Oleksiy Chirniy – were detained in Crimea. The men had an active pro-Ukrainian stand and openly disagreed with the occupation of the peninsula by the Russian Federation. They were accused of crimes related to terrorism.
