About the XII International Documentary Film Festival on Human Rights Docudays UA, which will be held in Kiev, in the studio SK presenter Catherine Nekreche says program director of the festival Gennady Kofman.
From 20 to March 23 in Kiev will host the XII International Festival of Documentary Films on Human Rights Docudays UA. For the first time the festival was held in 2003. Tell us a little about the history of the festival.
Yes, the first time the festival was held in 2003. By this time it has developed such a direction as festivals Network for Human Rights. These festivals take place in many countries. Now the network has about 40 festivals from Holland to the most exotic countries. In 2003, we were the first impressions, but we did not threaten the fact that the festival is an international, just wanted to make a panorama of human rights films show a good documentary film and encourage the audience to engage in dialogue. Over time, the festival began to grow, we became close in the shows in the “Days of Documentary Film” and we have issued it to the status of an international film festival with the competitive program, we now have three competitions. In 2003, there was a good internet and did not have access to that amount of pirated resources. Although, even today, most of them do not have a chance to see those movies that we bring to the festival because it is the author’s creative documentary, not the popular thing. We offer an exclusive audience, which can be viewed only on Docudays UA.
What films shown at festivals before?
There are themes that rise from year to year. This is the theme of children’s rights, revealing the fate of children in difficult situations, the refugee theme, the theme of freedom of speech. This year the main theme of the festival is propaganda. Would be considered different aspects of advocacy – through education and through the post-war conflicts, which have been in other countries. This topic will be disclosed in the movies, and in the discussions. The moderator of this topic will be a well-known human rights defender Vladimir Yavorsky, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.
Who are the authors of films at the festival?
Author’s documentary – a very specific scope, but it is not a business. People who shoot this movie, there is a basic specialty (political scientist, anthropologist, and others), and the film – it is part of their studies. Someone engaged in cinema more professionally as a cinematographer, but these films require a lot of time for immersion in the subject. There is a student short films. This year’s festival includes films from 37 countries – the US, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries strongly represented, Czech Republic, Brazil, Chile, South Africa and others. There are films of Ukrainian authors. Over the past year a number of Ukrainian documentary films have been recognized at the international level, so I think our film makers will take a decent niche.
There are some general trends in documentary filmmaking today?
Many films currently shooting on the inner circle, the camera has now become closer to the hero. It may be close relatives, friends. Sometimes dipping person spends many years with their heroes, becoming a member of this community. That is now more intimate documentary.
How to change the emphasis of Ukrainian authors?
Greatly changed. When the festival began, the young Ukrainian movie almost was not. It was only 2-3 behalf of young filmmakers. Closer to 2010 there was some vagueness authors, the absence of pain. Very much all I changed Maidan. Splash Civil documentary appeared, when people did not reckon with the lack of budget and special conditions for themselves, they took the camera and filmed. Today Ukrainian authors have something to say and they know how to say. Today there are a lot of decent work and it is difficult to choose what to show at the festival. Ukrainian authors represented in all three competition programs. Ukrainians sent to the contest about 50 works, 12 of which we will show on festivale.1
What is the difference between Ukrainian and foreign filmmakers?
For Ukrainian writers today do not create conditions to support projects. In world practice, before the director begins to make a film, it should have sufficient time to study and development of a theme. In Ukraine, such a system does not support the author can get the opportunity to go on an expedition, for example, for a year. Our guys are doing it “on their knees”, but due to the enthusiasm.
What is the cost to remove a documentary film today?
50-150 thousand euros. Can be removed and 300 hryvnia (for example, has a camera and editor-friend), but at the expense of quality and professionalism.
