World Day Against Internet Censorship

World Day Against Internet Censorship is observed on March 12th every year to raise awareness about internet censorship and advocate for a free, open, and uncensored internet. The day is marked by various events and campaigns to draw attention to the issue of online censorship, which is a growing concern around the world.

The day was first established in 2008 by the French group “Reporters Without Borders” (RSF) and is now observed by many organizations and activists globally. The goal is to promote freedom of expression and access to information online, as well as to highlight the ways in which governments and other actors are using internet censorship to limit these rights. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of a free and open internet and to take action against censorship and restrictions on online content.

Online censorship can restrict the free flow of information and limit freedom of expression. Internet censorship can be used by governments to silence opposition voices, limit access to critical information, and curtail online activism and organizing for social and political change.

By drawing attention to this issue, the World Day Against Internet Censorship helps to promote freedom of expression and access to information, which are fundamental human rights recognized by international law. It also highlights the importance of protecting and promoting online human rights, including the right to privacy, freedom of thought, and access to information, and encourages governments and other actors to respect these rights.
