Sergio Jaramillo Caro, Senior Advisor at the European Institute of Peace, met the Ukrainian activists and students
On 15 April, Sergio Jaramillo Caro, a Colombian politician, visited the Center for Civil Liberties. He met with representatives of the Ukrainian civil society and students from faculties of international relations at Kyiv universities.
Mr Caro is a Senior Advisor at the European Institute of Peace (EIP). Earlier he served as High Commissioner for Peace (2012-2016) and National Security Advisor (2010-2012) to the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos. Mr Caro was Vice Minister of Defence of Columbia and Ambassador of his country to the European Union and Belgium. Now he leads the Aguanta Ucrania! media campaign of Latin America’s solidarity with Ukraine. In June 2023, he was wounded when the Russians hit a café in Kramatorsk where he was meeting the Ukrainian writer Victoria Amelina.
“At the meeting of Mr Caro with the Ukrainian civil society activists, we learned about the situation with war and violence victims in Columbia and shared experience in investigating human rights violations and war crimes”, Roman Nekoliak, International Relations Coordinator of the Center for Civil Liberties said.
A special meeting was held with students from international relations faculties in Kyiv. The young people expressed interest in Caro’s Aguanta Ucrania! media campaign promoting Latin America’s solidarity with Ukraine, sources of conflict in Columbia and the level of awareness of the situation in Ukraine in Colombian society.
