Human rights defenders and prisoners relatives demand the release of Ukrainian medics from Russian captivity
Russia is forcibly holding more than 500 Ukrainian doctors. There are both civilians and military medics among them. On July 27, the Medical Worker Day, the Center for Civil Liberties, together with the public organization “Military Medics of Ukraine”, launches a large-scale information and advocacy campaign aimed at observing the rights of medical workers who were captured as a result of the russian-ukrainian war. According to the International Humanitarian Law, it is forbidden to humiliate, torture and abuse prisoners of war!
“We were treated like dogs. It was forbidden to touch us or approach us. In such conditions, all chronic diseases usually come out, and everyone has different ones. There was a constant lack of medicines. And when our medicines ran out, there was nothing left to treat us with,” recalls military medic Mariana Mamonova about her days in captivity.
The Russian military is committing regular war crimes against medical personnel in captivity. Medics are called upon to save lives and alleviate suffering, but they are being punished for fulfilling their professional duty to the last.
The Center for Civil Liberties appeals to international medical institutions and organizations to increase pressure on Russia to save until they are released from captivity the lives of those who have honorably taken the Hippocratic oath and sometimes at the cost of their own health and freedom have saved many lives.
We also call for the solidarity of all Ukrainian and foreign medical professionals and ask to spread this information by calling on the relevant institutions and tagging them in social media. The text of the post in Ukrainian and English, illustrations, and a list of institutions and tags are attached separately.
This advocacy and information campaign is part of the Prisoners Voice Initiative, which aims to release all civilian prisoners, prisoners of war and political prisoners who have been held captive as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war since 2014 and which operates within the Center for Civil Liberties.
