International Holocaust Remembrance Day

The UN General Assembly declared January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was on this day in 2005 that the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution № 60/7 “Holocaust Remembrance”, Ukraine adopted the Resolution in 2012, although it was one of the six countries that initiated the document.

This date was chosen not by chance: it was on this day that the prisoners of the largest concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau near Auschwitz, Poland, were released.

Around 1.5 million people in Ukraine were victims of the Holocaust. Places of the largest mass executions of Jews in Ukraine: Babyn Yar (Kyiv) – more than 100,000, Bogdanovka of Odesa region – more than 40,000, Drohobych Yar (Kharkiv) – about 20,000, Kamyanets-Podilsky – 23,600, Dalnyk of Odesa region – about 18,000, Sosonka tract near Rivne – more than 17,000 victims. These terrible events are forever etched in our memory.

We must all learn this terrible lesson so that it never happens again.
