#MakeRussiaPay. The Center for Civil Liberties and the Anticorruption Action Center urge to sign a petition on confiscation of Russian assets in favor of Ukraine
For almost two years, Ukraine has been facing relentless aggression from Russia, resulting in unimaginable suffering and destruction. The losses of Ukrainian lives and infrastructure are immeasurable, with calculated damages reaching billions. It is time to take decisive action and hold Russia accountable for its atrocities. However, true justice lies not only in the punishment of war criminals but also in the economic responsibility of the aggressor for all the damage caused. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Western countries have frozen about half of the gold and foreign exchange reserves of the Central Bank of Russia, which is almost $300 billion.
What is this money needed for?
No money will ever compensate for the enormous grief that the Russian Federation has brought to Ukrainians. No money can bring back a child killed by a Russian missile to their parents or return to the Ukrainian defenders their forever lost health.
However, the confiscated Russian funds will help Ukraine rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the Russians, treat the wounded and support the victims of the war, and, most importantly, strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities so that it can continue to fight against Russian aggression and ultimately win.
How can we help unfreeze this money?
That is why we urge you to join in signing the petition demanding G7 and EU leaders for the immediate confiscation of Russian assets. This will send a powerful signal of solidarity with Ukraine and demonstrate that aggression will not go unpunished. These funds should be directed towards supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities and resilience. Ukrainians stand for democracy, justice, and human rights in the face of tyranny.
