In 2014 and 2015, Mykhailo Omelchuk provided tactical medicine training to the Ukrainian military on a voluntary basis. He was not a member of the military himself. On March 5, 2022, Mykhailo went outside his house to walk his dogs. While he was outside, the Russian military broke down the front door of Mykhailo’s apartment and conducted an illegal search. Afterward, the Russian military went outside, grabbed Mykhailo, said they would judge him in Moscow, and took him in an unknown direction. It was only in September 2022 that Mykhailo’s mother learned from a released prisoner that her son had been taken to Belarus, and from there to pretrial detention center number 2 in Novozybkiv, Bryansk Oblast. The Red Cross has not confirmed Mykhailo’s detention in Russia.
