International Day of UN Peacekeepers

On May 29, 2002, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The first peacekeeping mission was established in 1948 and more than 70 peacekeeping missions have been organized since then.

Peacekeepers help organize elections, reform law enforcement bodies, protect human rights, assist with demining, organize the disarmament of former combatants, and support measures to return refugees and displaced persons to their homes.

Ukraine has been actively involved in peacekeeping missions since 1992. Currently, around 300 Ukrainian servicemen and women are participating in 8 international peacekeeping operations.
