The Council of Europe was founded 73 years ago in 1949, with an ambitious task of “never again”. While the European Coal and Steel Community furthered after war reconstruction of Europe, the Council pioneered the European integration process, its political reconstruction based on a set of fundamental values.

The Council of Europe has produced over 220 treaties to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The Council of Europe (CoE) and the Government of Ukraine pursue a common goal: the promotion of stability and security on the basis of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights.

The Council of Europe played an important role in the transition of the former Eastern Bloc countries, which consequently led them to join the EU. No country has ever joined the EU without first belonging to the Council of Europe, while Great Britain left the EU it stays committed to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

To conclude, CoE is an international organization, a think tank with significant experience and expertise, it is a source of innovative regulation, It continuously monitors compliance with human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the Member States.

On the #CoE 73rd anniversary, Secretary-General Marija Pejčinović Burić is calling on the 46 member-states to show trust and commitment to our common values as the basis of a just and secure future (see the annual report, Moving Forward 2022).
