The village of Kozarovychi, near Kyiv, came under occupation on February 26, 2022. Russian invaders set up their equipment and started searching houses. On March 3, 2022, Russian soldiers raided the house where journalist Dmytro Khilyuk lived with his parents, seized their phones and SIM cards, and checked their social media accounts. After the search, a shell from the ongoing battle for the village hit Dmytro’s house. According to local residents, Dmytro and his father were detained on March 4, 2022. Initially, the men were blindfolded and held with their hands tied in the factory in Dymer. Russian forces accused Dmytro of communicating with the Ukrainian military and law enforcement agencies. His father was later released, but Dmytro remains in captivity, possibly in correctional colony number 1, Tula Region, Donskoy city, or in penal colony number 7, Vladimir Region.
