CCL position regarding Lyudmila Denisova dismissal

Yesterday, the Parliament decided to dismiss Lyudmyla Denisova from the Ombudsman for Human Rights in Ukraine office contrary to the legal procedure. This decision undermines the independence of the institute. It is not about specific personalities and the effectiveness of their work, but about the importance of having independent institutions in general, no matter who heads them.

The Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights must be able to protect a people whose rights are violated, even against the will of the authorities and the prevailing public opinion. That is why the observance of the procedure for the appointment and removal of the Commissioner is so important, especially during the war with Russia.
