Interview with former Uruguayan President Jose Alberto Mujica Kordan. March, 2016

It is  a pity Uruguay is a small country. Had he been a leader in the G8 or the UN Security Council, our world would be better. Listen to his words for 10 minutes. It is worth it.

“Today I am the president of Uruguay, and, like all of us, I will become food for worms and will be gone. I know what frustration means, I know what pain means, I spent several years in prison. In general, it’s very common for anyone trying to change the world.

Uruguay is a small country and I have no presidential plane. We actually don’t need it. We decided to buy a expensive French helicopter, a rescue helicopter for medical equipment in order to reach remote areas. We bought it instead of buying a presidential plane.

It’s that simple. Do you understand the dilemma? The plane of the president or a rescue helicopter. And everything always comes down to this.

We have enough resources. We have enough political will. Government is concerned about winning the next election, worried about who will be the boss. We are struggling for power. And we forget about the people and global issues. “

Jose Alberto Mujica Kordan. ’81
President of Uruguay from March 1, 2010 to March 1, 2015
