Protection of Belarusian citizens who are forced to stay in Ukraine

Last month, as part of the #BelarusWatch campaign, the Center for Civil Liberties addressed Taras Tarasenko, a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament, about the cooperation between the Belarusian KGB and Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. In compliance with the international convention on legal assistance concluded between two countries, the agencies must respond to requests and provide information to the Lukashenko regime, regarding citizens who fled to Ukraine because of persecution in Belarus.

On Wednesday, November 3, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights decided to hold hearings on this issue, with the participation of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-parliamentary Cooperation, and the Committee on Legal Policy. The hearing will take place on 23 November 2021.

The Center for Civil Liberties would like to thank Taras Tarasenko for paying attention to our appeal and raising this issue at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee. We call on all organizations supporting Belarusians, who are persecuted for their political beliefs, to work together in order to ensure their security. CCL plans to initiate such meeting between NGOs in the near future.
